Japanese Skincare Routine for Dry Skin (Step-by-Step Guide)
Japanese skincare focuses on hydration, gentle layering, and protecting the skin barrier. Instead of harsh treatments, the goal is to keep skin soft, moisturized, and balanced.
Here is a typical Japanese routine perfect for dry skin.
1️⃣ Gentle Oil Cleanser
Start with a cleansing oil to remove makeup and sunscreen without stripping moisture. DHC deep cleansing oil is Japan's cult favourite cleanser.
Why it helps dry skin
Keeps natural oils intact
Prevents tightness after washing
Leaves skin soft and hydrated
Look for ingredients like:
Camellia oil
Rice bran oil
Squalane
2️⃣ Mild Foaming Cleanser
After the oil cleanse, use a gentle foaming cleanser. Curel is a drugstore brand which is gentle yet effective. Curel foaming facial wash is especially made for oily and sensitive skin - I always have one of these bottles in my bathroom.
Japanese cleansers are designed to:
Clean deeply
Keep skin hydrated
Maintain the skin barrier
Tip: Avoid cleansers with strong sulfates.
3️⃣ Hydrating Lotion (Toner)
In Japan, “lotion” means hydrating toner, not moisturiser. If you're looking to try one then this is a great one to try. A beautiful light layer of hydration to keep your skin feeling silky all day. Hadarabo Gokujyun lotion
This step is essential for dry skin because it:
Adds the first layer of hydration
Helps skin absorb later products
Makes skin plump and soft
Apply with hands or cotton pads.
4️⃣ Hydrating Essence or Serum
Next comes a lightweight essence or serum.
Look for ingredients such as:
Hyaluronic acid
Fermented rice extract
Green tea
Ceramides
These ingredients help lock in moisture and repair dry skin.
5️⃣ Moisturiser (Emulsion or Cream)
Japanese routines often use an emulsion first, then cream.
For dry skin:
Use a rich cream
Choose formulas with ceramides or collagen
This step seals hydration into the skin.
6️⃣ Facial Oil (Optional)
For very dry skin, add a few drops of facial oil.
Popular Japanese oils include:
Camellia oil
Rice bran oil
This helps prevent overnight moisture loss.
7️⃣ Sunscreen (Morning Routine)
Japanese beauty emphasises daily sunscreen, even in winter.
One of my favourites is Shiseido Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen . Beautifully light and feels like skin care not sunscreen. The other drugstore one I love is Biore UV Aqua Rich. It has the lightest gel texture
Benefits:
Prevents dryness from UV damage
Protects skin barrier
Prevents premature aging
Japanese Tips for Dry Skin
Japanese beauty philosophy focuses on consistency and hydration.
Helpful habits:
Use layered hydration instead of heavy products
Apply skincare while skin is slightly damp
Drink plenty of water and green tea
Avoid over-exfoliating
Final Thoughts
A Japanese skincare routine for dry skin is all about gentle cleansing, hydration layers, and moisture sealing. By focusing on skin barrier care, this routine can help create soft, smooth, and healthy-looking skin.
